Giant Pumpkin Production: The Challenge of Reaching 2,000 Pounds

What does it take to grow a pumpkin of more than 2,000 pounds?

In addition to dedication, experience, and careful crop management, having reliable products for soil care is part of the strategy for achieving extraordinary results.

Laird Dickinson is an example of this. After facing various difficulties during the cycle, he managed to grow a 2,046-pound pumpkin that won first place at the Nekoosa Giant Pumpkin Festival in the United States. This specimen not only became the heaviest of his career, but also brought him closer to one of his biggest goals: surpassing a ton of weight in a single pumpkin.

Behind this result are months of work and a combination of factors that make exceptional harvests possible. Among them, Laird highlights the importance of Ferti-Organic products, whose support has been part of his experience as a grower.

A giant pumpkin that exceeded expectations

The Nekoosa Giant Pumpkin Festival brought together growers from different parts of the Midwest of the United States, who presented specimens developed to reach extraordinary dimensions.

In this competition, Laird’s pumpkin stood out for its weight and won first place. At 2,046 pounds, it exceeded by 17% the weight he had projected it would reach and set a new personal record.

After the competition, the specimen was purchased and transported to Chicago, where it will be displayed as the main attraction of a pumpkin theme park. For approximately one month, thousands of visitors will be able to admire the result of this season.

Reaching these dimensions represents a challenge that goes beyond size. Each stage requires attention and decisions aimed at promoting its development.

Reliable products that accompany great results

In the production of giant pumpkins, the potential of each variety is related to various factors, such as environmental conditions, agronomic management, nutrition, and soil characteristics.

Choosing suitable products for soil care is part of that process. Having top-tier solutions allows growers to work with greater confidence and to meet the needs of their plants during the different stages of development.

At the close of the harvest, Laird shared with us a message of gratitude in which he highlighted that having suitable suppliers of raw materials for his soil has been fundamental in his experience.

“Although it was a tough start, this season ended up as one of the best I have ever had. I wanted to, again, thank you and your company for your continued support. I truly wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of this without you. Having top-quality products in my soil is the number one reason these plants got to the size they did. I can’t thank you enough!”

His testimony reflects the trust he has placed in our products and the value he attributes to them within his work. Because behind an extraordinary harvest there are also important decisions about how to care for the soil and which products to use.

Other achievements of an exceptional cycle

Laird’s 2,046-pound pumpkin was not his only standout result. During the same cycle, he also produced a field pumpkin and giant-headed sunflowers.

The field pumpkin reached an official weight of 240 pounds. However, a small hole in the bottom of the specimen kept it from meeting the requirements to compete. According to Laird’s report, its weight would have exceeded the current GPC world record for this category by five pounds, although it could not be established as a new official competition record.

As for the giant sunflowers, two of the four he planted reached notable dimensions. Both were reported as possible new state records, pending official validation. The largest specimen measured 90 inches, exceeding the previous state record by more than ten inches.

These results reflect a year of experimentation, learning, and progress with different species, even in the face of the unforeseen events that can arise during the harvest.

The next challenge: going beyond 2,046 pounds

After a cycle full of challenges and outstanding results, Laird is already starting to prepare for the next one. Among his plans is planting cover crops before taking a well-deserved rest and beginning to work on his next goals.

With a personal record of 2,046 pounds, the challenge now is to keep moving forward and surpass his own result in the next season.

At Ferti-Organic, we are proud to be part of the experience of growers who trust our products to care for their land and develop their projects. We thank Laird Dickinson for sharing his results and for recognizing the value of having reliable products in his soil.
